Whilst driving into Coober Pedy, I was amazed to see all of the sand dunes around the surrounding area of where people have been digging their claims. The cool thing about Coober Pedy is that there is corporate mining companies here, all of the digging is done by the little man. Awesome!
All of the businesses such as banks, fuel depots, shops etc are above ground and the majority of the people live underground. We camped in the only underground campsite in the world, the place was called Reba's. They also did an underground mine tour which was really informative. They even showed us how to make explosives!! I had ammonium nitrate prills in my hand...cool hey... 5.1 / 1942 ( from memory ). You can not get a real feel for Coober Pedy if you don't go and visit Crocodile Harry. He is in his eighties now and is unfortunately dying of cancer. His actually dug out his house. It took him thirty years to do. The atmosphere in Coober Pedy is very infectious...but I am definitely not going to pack up and move here in the hope of finding me the big black opal.
